Pop star Madonna and her husband, film director Guy Ritchie, are to divorce, it has been reported.

The couple, who have been married for nearly eight years, will announce their split “imminently”, The Sun said. The BBC has been unable to confirm this.

There has been increasing speculation in recent months that the couple’s relationship was on the rocks.

In July, Madonna’s publicist denied the pair were planning to divorce, saying their marriage did not “need saving”.

Last month, the pair appeared together at the premiere of Ritchie’s film RocknRolla.

They walked arm-in-arm and posed for photographs in London’s Leicester Square.

Ritchie, 40, had rebutted suggestions his marriage was over with a public show of support at Madonna’s 50th birthday party in August.

He also gave a US magazine interview in July saying: “My marriage is fine, as far as I’m aware of.”

Madonna is currently in New York in the middle of her Sticky and Sweet tour.

The pair married in December 2000 at Skibo Castle in the Scottish Highlands.

They have two sons together, seven-year-old Rocco and David Banda, whose adoption from Malawi was approved in May.

The singer also has an 11-year-old daughter, Lourdes, from an earlier relationship.

A spokeswoman for Madonna told the BBC News website that there would be no comment until the working day had begun in the US.

Alicia Keys - Five American Music Awards Nominations

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - R&B singer Alicia Keys picked up five nominations for the American Music Awards, while rock bands Coldplay and the Eagles scored four each, organizers said on Tuesday.

All three will compete for artist of the year, alongside rapper Lil Wayne and R&B star Chris Brown, who have three nominations each.

The 36th annual American Music Awards will be held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on November 23, with comedian Jimmy Kimmel returning as host. ABC will broadcast in the United States. Scheduled performers include teen idols the Jonas Brothers, pop singer Pink and reunited boy band New Kids on the Block.

For the second year, winners will be determined by online voting. They used to be decided by a poll of 20,000 music buyers, but producers decided to make the event more inclusive in the wake of slumping ratings. The move seemed to work, with last year’s show attracting 11.8 million viewers, up from 10.9 million the year before.

Keys was recognized for her album, “As I Am,” which opened at No. 1 on the U.S. pop chart last November. It was cited for favorite album in the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories, and she was nominated for favorite artist in both those categories.

Coldplay and the Eagles will also go head-to-head for both favorite artist and favorite album in the pop/rock category. Additionally, Coldplay was cited for favorite alternative artist, and the Eagles for favorite adult contemporary artist.

Coldplay ruled the charts for two weeks during the summer with their fifth album, “Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends,” and the Eagles went to the top last November with their first album in 27 years, “Long Road Out of Eden.”

Should we take global warming seriously?

How long do you take in the shower? Five minutes? Ten? Twenty? Would you take shorter showers if it meant you would be saving the planet? It’s true - heating water uses energy. Furthermore, we all need to cut down on our consumption. Quick.

Global warming is currently the biggest threat to mankind, which made it all too shocking to discover that most teenagers aren’t even aware of it.

As part of our media coursework, we were asked to produce a print advertisement for a campaign of our choice. I decided on global warming - it’s amazing that during the last century the average surface air temperature has risen by 0.5C.

However, I was stunned by the results from the questionnaire I conducted. The majority of teens believe that global warming is a myth or won’t be effecting the planet for “ages”.

There needs to be more done to raise awareness and inform us teens. After all, we are the future. If we all tried to do a little bit, it would make a difference.

Scientists have said that we will be able to notice substantial damage by the year 2030.

Moreover, I am taken aback that today’s youth aren’t taking this issue seriously. Sea levels are rising rapidly and parts of the Earth are disappearing forever.

Polar bears are drowning as their homes gradually fade away. It’s time we all make an effort. If we walked to school or took public transport instead of travelling by car, it would make a difference.

Until a while ago, I used to leave my laptop on standby when I wasn’t using it. But now I switch it off. This saves energy - which would’ve just gone to waste.

If we all work hard enough we can make this planet a safe place for out great-great grandchildren. Instead of destroying it.

So next time your in the shower, try to get out as quick as possible. The future is in your hands.
